Dr. Lee Kang-Won is Vice President and Head of Cloud Labs at SK Telecom.
In this role, he spearheads the company’s R&D efforts in cloud technologies to further expand the 5G service portfolio to enhance customer experience and strengthen SK Telecom’s leadership in the global 5G scene.
At present, Dr. Lee is actively leading the development of mobile edge cloud (MEC) technologies, which allow for optimal provision of ultra-low latency 5G services such as cloud gaming, smart factories, and autonomous driving.
Dr. Lee has been working closely with global ICT players including Deutsche Telekom, Amazon Web Services, Microsoft, Dell Technologies, Intel, and NVIDIA to accelerate innovations in 5G edge cloud. He also played an integral role in launching ‘Global MEC Task Force’ with Bridge Alliance Member Operators to expand the 5G edge cloud ecosystem.
Dr. Lee had also driven the company’s digital transformation of network infrastructure using open technologies such as software-defined networking (SDN), OpenStack and open hardware.
Prior to joining SK Telecom in 2014, Dr. Lee served as Research Manager at the IBM Watson Research Center in New York for 14 years, contributing to IBM’s key software products such as Informix and Tivoli.
Dr. Lee holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in computer engineering from Seoul National University and earned a Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champagne (UIUC). He is an ACM distinguished scientist and IEEE senior member.
